The Holiday Inn University Center is gearing up for the 43rd Annual Tire Kingdom NHRA Gatornationals on Thursday, March 8 through March 11, 2012. Our team is moving full throttle to ensure the hotel is ready for Top Fuel Fans.
The Gatornationals is an annual National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) national drag racing event held each March at Gainesville Raceway in Gainesville, Florida. The event was held for the first time in 1970. The name “Gator” comes from the University of Florida, which is located near the Gainesville Raceway. Gatornationals is traditionally the third racing event of the season and the first event on the East Coast of the United States.
Gainesville Raceway opened in 1969 and held its first Gatornationals event in 1970. Long considered one of the fastest tracks on the NHRA circuit, it was from this legendary launch point that drivers clocked the first 260-, 270- and 300-mph Top Fuel runs. It also was from this starting line, during the 2000 Mac Tools NHRA Gatornationals, that eight of 10 national records were set in the professional classes.
